Welcome to the Oxford Human Rights Student Society!

Whether you already have a keen passion for human rights, or just want to find out more about what human rights careers & issues entail, this is the place for you, and we would love for you to join us!

This Michaelmas term, our committee has worked incredibly hard to put together a diverse term card shedding light such important human rights issues and careers. We were so excited to share it with you at the Freshers Fair, and we really loved seeing some of you at our events -- including:

- our panel with barristers at Doughty Street Chambers in Week 2

- our panel on Pro Bono Work and Access to Justice in Week 3

- our talk on Human Trafficking in a global context in Week 5

- our talk on quantifying the lived experiences of the LGBTQ+ community in Week 6

In particular, I would like to thank you for your invaluable participation at our Week 5 event sharing a Grounds Eye Perspective from Dr Rose, a surgeon who has spent 2 months volunteering in Gaza. It was wonderful seeing so many of you there, and to hear your valuable contributions to one of the most pressing human rights crises in the world.

With three more weeks to go in the term, we really hope to see you at:

- our ESG panel in collaboration with Law Soc in Week 7 and

- our Week 8 panel on Genocide Prevention and Awareness, featuring first and second generation survivors of genocide.

Last but not least, we round up the term with a Fundraiser Concert in week 8! - where you and your friends can play and raise money for a charity of your choice. There will be plenty of music, drinks and socialising, and we would love to see you there, even if that is your first OHRSS event!

Our blog continues to go strong, so keep your eyes peeled for weekly articles on a wide range of human rights topics! And if you have a topic that you are passionate about, please do submit an article, we would love to hear your thoughts!

A final message from me: I joined Oxford with a fixed idea of what my future career was going to be. But being a part of OHRSS has opened my eyes to so many valuable opportunities that I would have otherwise never encountered, and allowed me to learn from inspiring figures doing such important work in the world right now.

This is an invaluable experience that I would recommend to anyone, and I really hope some of you will consider joining, or even applying for committee next term!

Thanks for reading my longwinded message, and I look forward to meeting you all soon!
